Foods and Drinks that can Stain Your Teeth

August 12th, 2013

Many people who seek teeth whitening treatment do so to reverse signs of premature discoloration caused by the regular consumption of certain foods and beverages.

If you’re unhappy with the state of your smile, Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Kevin Sands can help you determine if teeth whitening or another treatment is best-suited for achieving the results you desire. Please call the office of Kevin Sands, DDS, Cosmetic Dentistry at 310-273-0111 to schedule your personal consultation.

When it comes to foods and drinks that cause teeth discoloration, the usual suspects include:

  • Wine: The acids in both red and white wine promote discoloration
  • Tea: Like wine, it contains stain-causing tannins
  • Coffee: It is high in the pigmented molecules known as chromogens, which latch onto enamel
  • Cola, sports drinks and other soft drinks: Bad in all sorts of ways, they are rich in acids, chromogens and sugars
  • Berries and other dark-colored fruits: Though they have other health benefits, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, grapes and other fruits can contribute to teeth discoloration over time
  • Sauces: Dark-colored and/or highly acidic sauces such as tomato sauce and curry can play a role in teeth staining
  • Juices: The sugars, acids and colorations of many fruit juices can lead to surface staining
  • Candy and other sweets: Like soft drinks, candies often contain a multitude of the worst things for your teeth

Of course, these same foods and drinks can also discolor your teeth after your teeth whitening procedure and accelerate the need for follow-up treatment. Although it’s impossible to cut out all of these things, there are steps you can take to maintain your vibrant, teeth whitening results; Dr. Sands will discuss your care guidelines with you prior to your treatment.

Maintaining the Results of Teeth Whitening Treatment

July 29th, 2013

One of the most frequently asked questions about professional teeth whitening is, How long will the results last?

The answer depends on a number of individual factors, including your dental hygiene routine, diet and lifestyle; that said, many patients are able to maintain their celebrity smiles for months to years without the need for follow-up treatments. Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Kevin Sands has helped a number of celebrities restore and sustain vibrant smiles with teeth whitening, and he can help you determine the best teeth whitening treatment for your unique needs.

The foundation of maintaining a bright, healthy smile is your dental hygiene routine. This should include brushing your teeth at least twice every day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing should be followed at least once daily with flossing.

It is also important to receive biannual dental checkups and teeth cleanings. These visits allow the removal of plaque, which contributes to teeth staining and decay, that brushing alone cannot remove.

Your diet and lifestyle choices such as smoking also affect the color and health of your teeth. The regular consumption of beverages like wine, tea, coffee and soft drinks, and dark-colored foods like berries and sauces can contribute to teeth discoloration. Smoking is bad for both the aesthetics of your teeth and your overall health.

Occasional follow-up treatment, such as with our custom take-home teeth whitening systems, can also help you maintain a beautiful, confident smile.

If you live in Los Angeles and would like to learn about your teeth whitening treatment options, please contact Kevin Sands, DDS, Cosmetic Dentistry online or call our office at 310-273-0111 to schedule your personal consultation.

Please call the office of Kevin Sands, DDS, Cosmetic Dentistry at 310-273-0111 to schedule your personal consultation.

Dr. Sands understands that everyone’s smile is unique. Over-the-counter teeth whiteners are mass produced with a one-size-fits-all mindset, and they often lead to unsatisfactory results.

Retail teeth whiteners can contribute to inconsistent coloration and allow the bleaching agents to seep onto your sensitive gums. Dr. Sands utilizes the Zoom! teeth whitening system, which features custom-fit whitening trays and limits any contact with your gumline.

Professional teeth whitening treatment also offers a noticeably brighter smile in a single visit, whereas over-the-counter teeth whiteners generally require weeks to months of repeat use to achieve visible results.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. At-Home Teeth Whitening

July 19th, 2013

Retailers everywhere offer a wide range of take-home teeth whitening kits, but these mass-market products can’t match the benefits of professional teeth whitening administered by a knowledgeable cosmetic dentist.

Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Kevin Sands has helped numerous celebrities maintain close-up ready smiles with teeth whitening, and he can help you determine the best treatment option for your unique needs and aesthetic desires. Please call the office of Kevin Sands, DDS, Cosmetic Dentistry at 310-273-0111 to schedule your personal teeth whitening consultation.

Retail teeth whiteners typically require long-term, repeat use in order to achieve and maintain noticeable results. Professional teeth whitening treatments like Zoom! teeth whitening can produce a visibly brighter smile in a single session.

Professional teeth whitening with Dr. Sands also provides customized attention with uniform, natural-looking results. Over-the-counter teeth whiteners are not tailored to the individual characteristics of your smile, and they often cause spotty results.

The effects of professional teeth whitening treatments also tend to last longer than those of commercial teeth whiteners. Patients generally desire a follow-up teeth whitening treatment at some point, but you can maintain a bright, healthy smile indefinitely by practicing a good dental hygiene routine and making healthy diet and lifestyle choices.

Dr. Sands also offers Zoom! take-home teeth whitening systems with form-fitting trays to help you maintain your results.

If you live in the greater Los Angeles area and would like to learn more about your teeth whitening options, please contact Kevin Sands, DDS, Cosmetic Dentistry.

Coffee vs. Soda: Which Stains Teeth More?

January 10th, 2011

Both coffee and soda are well-known teeth staining culprits. Most people do not brush their teeth after drinking dark drinks, and leaving drinks like coffee, soda, tea, and wine on your teeth will accelerate staining. Zoom! tooth whitening can remove the staining effects of these drinks, dramatically brightening your smile.

Coffee and Soda Cause Tooth Decay and Discoloration

Soda contains caramel coloring, sugar, and phosphoric acid among other ingredients. Coffee also has a dark color as well as a high acid content. Coffee and Soda slowly degrade the enamel layer, exposing the vulnerable dentin layer underneath. The color of dentin is naturally yellow, so decayed enamel can lead to yellowing of the teeth.

The acid in soda slowly dissolves the calcium in the enamel that protects your teeth. Without calcium, your enamel becomes soft, and bacteria can easily attack your teeth causing tooth decay. Soda also contains high amounts of sugar that severely accelerates tooth decay. The caramel coloring in soda will darken and dull your teeth if not removed immediately by brushing and flossing.

Coffee and soda affect your teeth in the same manner and both can severely stain your teeth. It is important to drink both coffee and soda in moderation to reduce the affects of staining. If your teeth have been stained by coffee, soda, or other factors, Dr. Sands provides his Los Angeles patients with Zoom! tooth whitening treatments to correct discoloration of teeth.

By visiting Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Sands for routine dental checkups and professional teeth cleaning, the stains on your teeth can be removed along with harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar that lead to tooth decay.

Common Questions About Teeth Whitening

November 3rd, 2010

What are my options for tooth whitening?

Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Sands offers two options for whitening your teeth:

  • Zoom! System
  • At-home teeth bleaching kits

The Zoom! System whitens teeth in one office visit that takes about 60 minutes. The treatment itself takes about 45 minutes. The remaining time is used for preparation and a little post-procedure monitoring, as well as showing you how to use the follow-up kit. The Zoom! System shines a special light directly onto your teeth to activate the gel. The gel then releases oxygen into the tooth enamel, which breaks up the pigment molecules that are staining your teeth. The resulting short chain molecules do not have a dark color.

The at-home teeth bleaching kits use trays that we will have made for you to fit comfortably and snugly over your teeth. The bleaching kits we provide are more effective than over-the-counter kits. They can also be used after the Zoom! System if you wish to whiten your teeth even more. However, since the Zoom! System includes a take-home kit for maintaining your new bright color, you would not need a separate at-home kit.

Why should I whiten my teeth?

Tooth whitening is one of the best cosmetic dentistry procedures to improve the overall appearance of your smile. Whiter teeth not only brighten your smile, they brighten your entire face. Healthy, white teeth look younger and thus help to take years off your appearance. Tooth whitening is a safe, easy, and affordable cosmetic dentistry proceudre that will help improve your smile’s appearance and health.

How do I schedule a teeth whitening appointment?

What Causes Teeth to Stain?

October 14th, 2010

Teeth can become discolored and stained for many reasons:

  • Strongly pigmented foods such as berries
  • Some other foods such as apples and potatoes
  • Strongly pigmented drinks such as cola drinks, coffee, red wine, and tea
  • Tobacco
  • Some medications
  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Some diseases
  • Trauma to the teeth
  • Excessive Use of Fluoride
  • Metal amalgam
  • Poor Dental Hygiene

Dental procedures have vastly improved in recent years. Older dental materials like metal amalgam eventually cause the teeth to appear dull or gray. To avoid this, you will want to have tooth-colored fillings for your tooth restorations.

Remove Stains with Tooth Whitening

Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Sands offers tooth whitening to remove stains and discoloration on your teeth. Both the in-office and at-home tooth whitening options we provide will dramatically whiten your teeth. There are two tooth whitening choices:

  • The Zoom! Chairside System
  • Home Tooth Bleaching Kits

Both options are safe, easy, and affordable. A take-home follow-up kit is part of the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System. You can use it right away if you think your teeth could become even whiter than they became in-office, or you could keep it for later touch-ups.

If you are interested in enhancing your smile and removing the stains on your teeth with tooth whitening, please contact our cosmetic dentistry office in Los Angeles, California.

How Long Do Teeth Whitening Results Last?

September 13th, 2010

The amazing results that you can get from the Zoom! teeth whitening treatment can last one to two years with good oral hygiene and regular visits for professional cleaning. In just one office visit that takes about an hour, Dr. Sands can brighten your smile up to eight shades whiter.

Keeping Your Smile White

To keep your smile white after having the Zoom! teeth whitening treatment, you will want to:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day
  • Floss at least once a day, preferably at bedtime
  • Have your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year
  • Avoid drinks and foods that can stain your teeth
  • Use an at-home teeth whitening kit for touch-ups

The home whitening kits come with trays that are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. You can maintain your brilliant smile by using the at-home kit at your convenience. Some of Dr. Sands’ patients choose to have the Zoom! teeth whitening treatment more frequently than every year or every other year.

What to Avoid to Keep Your Teeth Whitening Results

To keep your teeth whitening results as long possible, you will want to avoid a few habits and substances that will dull your smile:

  • Tobacco products
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Cola drinks
